This year’s west  Tennessee conference featured the documentary film,
“From Swastika to Jim Crow.”    Dr. Joyce Ladner served as the keynote speaker. Dr. Ladner,  was the first female president of Howard University and a participant in the film.  The film tells the little-known story of Jewish intellectuals who were able to escape Nazi Germany and immigrate to the U.S. where they were confronted with anti-Semitism and public distrust. This group ultimately sought refuge in an unlikely place; the historically-black colleges of the segregated South. Securing teaching positions, these scholars came to form lasting relationships with their students, and made significant contributions to the communities they served. The film is based on the book by Gabrielle Simon Edgcomb.
