Writing Prompts - Hanna Hamburger

Prompt 1

Please listen to Hanna Hamburger’s video story. In this source, the theme of personal isolation and ostracism has been identified. Despite all that Hanna and her family went through, Hanna still remembers her home of Eppingen fondly and has visited there. Many Jews never want to return to the site of their persecution and suffering during the Holocaust. After you have listened to her story, write an essay that both summarizes and analyzes her attitude about her hometown both during and after the Holocaust. Be sure to cite specific evidence to support your analysis.

Prompt 2

Hitler quickly set out an ambitious agenda to indoctrinate the German people in Nazi ideology and to influence the behavior of the entire society. As in Hanna’s story of the public pool closure to Jews, this was the first of many more legal restrictions to follow for the Jewish people. Write an essay that answers the question: How did the use of antisemitic propaganda create a climate in which German citizens accepted restrictions placed on Jews? Be sure to cite strong and thorough evidence from both the primary sources and from the video to support your argument.

The Nuremberg Laws passed in 1935 legally excluded Jews from German life and became the foundation for further anti-Jewish policies. Every element of life was upended, from public schools to employment, shopping, and entertainment. Some childhood friends no longer came around. Pictured below is Hanna’s report card excluding her from school because she is Jewish. Write an essay that compares and contrasts the intent of the Nuremberg Laws to make the Jewish citizens of Germany "civilly dead." with Hanna’s story. Be sure to cite specific and thorough evidence to support your analysis.
