Writing Prompts - Robert Eisenstein
Prompt 1
Please listen to Robert Eisenstein’s video story. In this source, Eisenstein comments on the location of the concentration camp Dachau (0:56): “The first thing I noticed about Dachau [was its location in proximity to the] town.” After you have listened to his story, write an essay that both summarizes and analyses the role of the local community members at Dachau. Be sure to cite specific evidence to support your analysis.
Prompt 2
Please visit this link: http://somewereneighbors.ushmm.org/#/exhibitions/neighbors/un1053/description to access the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum’s online exhibition: Some Were Neighbors: Collaboration and Complicity in the Holocaust. The link shows a photograph of neighbors watching as Jews are assembled for transport to the transit camp, Westerbork, and ultimately to Auschwitz.
Write an essay that answers the question: How does the photo from the USHMM online exhibition show evidence of German townspeople’s involvement in the Holocaust? Be sure to cite strong and thorough evidence from both sources (Eisenstein’s testimony and the online exhibit) to support your argument.
