Frieda Weinreich was born in Lodz, Poland.
1939
September 1: World War II began. September 3: Germans entered Lodz, Poland, Frieda’s hometown. The German army experienced little opposition and the young country fell within two weeks. December: Lodz Ghetto was established, and Frieda was imprisoned there.
1940
May 1: Lodz Ghetto was closed. No one was permitted to enter or exit. Frieda lived in the ghetto from 1940 until 1944. During these 4 ½ years, she worked a variety of jobs, including making straw shoes.
1941
Frieda’s father died from hunger.
